It is amazing what is still in the ground – archaeologists in Macedonia have uncovered a very intact Roman statue of Venus. It is dated to the 2-3 Centuries AD and was found in the ruins of Skupi, near Macedonia’s capital city. A lot of Roman statuary were (very good) copies of Greek originals – in most cases the Roman copy is the only way we know the Greek ones existed. This might be the case with this one.
Archaeology magazine’s feature article for the May/June 08 issue is Legend of the Crystal Skulls: the truth behind Indiana Jones’ latest quest. It is recommended reading before seeing the movie. An interesting story, though I doubt the film comes to the same conclusions!
